| What amino acid is "described" by the three bases C, A, and U (CAU)? |
| To determine the Amino Acid that is "described" by the three bases follow these steps:
NOTE : The letters in the steps will take you to the proper place in the Codon Table. |
| 1 | Find the letter C in the "First Letter" column. Notice that there several possibilities: CAU CAC CAA and CAG. These are the three letter abbreviations, His and Gln, for two possible amino acids. |
| 2 | Locate the letter A in the "Second Letter" row across the top of the chart and follow it down to the same three letter abbreviations. |
| 3 | To determine which amino acid is "described" by the original three letters, look for the third letter, U, in the "Third Letter" column on the right side of the chart to identify His as the three letter abbreviation for the specific amino acid "described" by the three bases. |
| 4 | With this three letter abbreviation, look in the "Amino Acid" table, which is arranged alphabetically for convenience, to locate the name
of the amino acid. His is the abbreviation for Histidine.
NOTE : Click on the abbreviation to go to the Amino Acid Table.) |
